4R Nutrient Stewardship

Why is Sylvite becoming a 4R Designated agri-retailer?

As an agri-retailer, we need to do everything we can to protect the environment and be good stewards of agriculture,” says Cassandra Loomans, Sylvite Vice President, “and I think that’s exactly what 4R Nutrient Stewardship does.

Sylvite and the Ontario agriculture industry are committed to working towards the long term improvement of the Great Lakes water quality. We feel that becoming a 4R designated agri-retailer is the best way to prioritize the success and profitability of our customers and the protection of the environment.

We’re committed to upholding the Principles of 4R Nutrient Stewardship in order to reduce our environmental footprint and work towards creating a more sustainable future. All of our applications and product recommendations will now be in line with Fertilizer Canada’s 4R standards.

We’ve advised grower customers with almost 5,000 total farm acres using the 4Rs of Nutrient Stewardship. 4R certified agri-retailers are able to track these numbers to measure the implementation of sustainable agriculture on their acres. Fertilizer Canada’s goal is to count and capture verified acres under 4R Nutrient Stewardship, which demonstrates the industry’s commitment to sustainability.

How will 4R Nutrient Stewardship benefit you?

The sustainable use of fertilizer and crop protection products has social, economic and environmental benefits.

Here are some benefits of using the 4Rs:

  • Optimizing nutrient management to help deal with the fluctuations in fertilizer prices.
  • Improved soil and crop management.
  • Allows farmers to grow more on less land.
  • Keeping nutrients within field boundaries and the crop rooting zone.

Why are the 4Rs important?

The Ontario agriculture industry is committed to working towards the long term improvement of the Great Lakes water quality. By supporting the need to protect and restore the ecological health of the Great Lakes, we are committed to being a part of the solution to ensuring the Great Lakes remain “drinkable, swimmable and stable.” The industry recognizes the potential for regulations, the importance of environmental stewardship and its role in ensuring the proper use of fertilizer.

Additionally, end-use customers are starting to demand that steps be taken to prove the agricultural industry is committed to sustainable practices.
