SYLVITE

History

Sylvite was founded in 1977 when Alex Henry and Don Rutherford left Hudson's Bay Mining and Smelting to start their own sales office.

The primary products were potash fertilizer, or Sylvanite ore, from Saskatchewan, hence the name Sylvite. Sylvite Sales Inc. focused on agricultural fertilizer products for the first five years.

In 1983, Hugh Loomans bought the company and introduced a number of additional agricultural products and value-added services including warehousing and trucking. The Company became a full-service agricultural and industrial supplier with the addition of many acquisitions over the years. Sylvite has two joint ventures operating in Pennsylvania and Florida with Canadian facilities located across the East.

Today, Sylvite is the largest Canadian-owned, independent wholesaler of farm fertilizer in Ontario and eastern Canada. Our integrated network includes over 300 service-oriented people, extensive warehousing services, trucking fuel, financial services and agricultural supply. Corporate expansion, through partnerships with allied operations in the United States has allowed us to play a significant role in the movement of fertilizer across the entire eastern seaboard.
